Glossary of Terms:
Indeterminate varieties continue to grow taller all season long and develop fruit throughout.
Determinate varieties reach a mature height and put out all tomatoes in a few week period, meaning a short time of heavy output and then the plant stops growing and slows fruit production considerably (this is particularly helpful if you are looking to can, freeze or roast large quantities of tomatoes because you’ll have many at one time)
Dwarf tomatoes are varieties developed to keep plants small, 2-4’ tall, to allow space-challenged gardeners the opportunity to grow tomatoes. Development of these varieties was done by an all volunteer group of amateur and hobby gardeners led by North Carolina’s own Craig LeHoullier.
Beefsteak varieties have the largest fruit
Container variety are smaller varieties usually reaching about 3’ tall that call grow in a 10 gallon container
Disease resistant are varieties bred to have more resistance to common tomato disease that often affect the life span and viability of the plant
Heirlooms are a variety of a plant grown and maintained by gardeners and farmers for generations assuring the plant doesn’t cross with others so the flavor can be passed down for generations
Saucing tomatoes are varieties traditionally used in the making of Italian tomato sauces
